Philippine politician. Leader of the Liberalist Party. Served in the Senate and House of Representatives, Secretary of the Treasury, and Secretary of the Interior. He remained in the Philippines during World War II and participated in anti-Japanese activities. He became vice president at the time of independence in 1946, and became the second president in 1948 after the sudden death of Roxas. He was re-elected in 1949, but lost to Magsaysay in 1953.
