A term used in gagaku. A name indicating the lineage of a gagaku expert (known as a musician, reinin, or gakushi). Also called the Nara side, it refers to musicians belonging to Kofukuji Temple in Nara. It is made up of eight families with the surname Koma: Ue, Nishi, Tsuji, Shiba, Oku, Higashi, Kubo, and Kubo (all families had the surname Koma before the 15th century). From the end of the Heian period, they had contact with musicians belonging to the court (Kyoto side), such as serving as left-hand dancers in bugaku at the imperial court. From the end of the 16th century, they played a part in the Sanpo Gakuso (three-way music hall) of the imperial court along with the Tennoji side.
