On November 6, 1983, a general election was held based on the new constitution and the new Political Party Law (effective April 23, 1983), putting an end to the military regime after three years and realizing the transfer of power to civilian rule. As a result of the election, the Fatherland Party Anavatan Partisi, led by economically savvy technocrat Özal Turgut (a former electrical engineer and former World Bank advisor), won 184 out of 330 seats, overwhelming the Populist Party (92 seats) and the Nationalist Democratic Party (54 seats) to gain power alone. It formed a cabinet (December 14, 1983) centered on technocrats with engineering backgrounds, and made clear its policy of resolving domestic problems through economic and technological development. Meanwhile, on November 16, 1983, the Turkish residents of northern Cyprus proclaimed the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus," which was immediately recognized by Turkey. ...
