Naohide Yatsu

Zoologist. Born in Tokyo. After graduating from the Faculty of Science, Tokyo Imperial University in 1900 (Meiji 33), he studied experimental morphology under Edmund Beecher Wilson (1856-1939) at Columbia University in the United States, where he received his doctorate. Returning to Japan in 1907, he was appointed as a lecturer at the Faculty of Science, and in 1910 became an associate professor. In 1920 (Taisho 9), he became a professor at Keio University, and in 1922, he became a professor at Tokyo Imperial University, and retired as a professor emeritus in 1938 (Showa 13). In 1936, he was appointed a member of the Imperial Academy. During his tenure at the university, he worked to guide and develop experimental zoology (experimental development, experimental morphology, physiology, etc.). His books include "Table of Animal Classification," "Lectures on Biology," and "An Introduction to the Systematics of Invertebrates." He also served as president of the Zoological Society of Japan for many years.

動物学者。東京市に生まれる。1900年（明治33）東京帝国大学理科大学を卒業後、アメリカ、コロンビア大学のウィルソンEdmund Beecher Wilson（1856―1939）のもとで実験形態学の研究を行い、博士号を得た。1907年に帰国し、理科大学講師を嘱託され、1910年には助教授となった。1920年（大正9）慶応義塾大学教授、1922年東京帝国大学教授となり、1938年（昭和13）退官して名誉教授。1936年には帝国学士院会員を命ぜられた。大学在任中は実験動物学（実験発生学、実験形態学、生理学など）の指導・発展に努めた。著書に『動物分類表』『生物学講義』『無脊椎(むせきつい)動物系統学概論』などがある。また、日本動物学会会頭も長年務めた。
