...In Japan, the company is officially registered under the name Universal Pictures. It was established in 1912 by merging several smaller companies with the Independent Motion Pictures Company (IMP), which was established in 1909 by Carl Laemmle (1867-1939), one of the pioneers of American film. Laemmle, who started out as a movie theater manager, believed that the commercial foundation of film was the fame of the actors, and he recruited actress Florence Lawrence (1886-1938), known as the "Biograph Girl," from Biograph, with a contract for an unprecedented salary of $1,000 a week at the time, and used her name in the title of the first film, laying the foundation for the "star system" in Hollywood.
