A scale that balances the weight of an object with the elasticity of an elastic body and measures the mass of an object using Hooke's law. Generally, wire springs and helical springs are used for small weighing capacity scales, while leaf springs and ring springs are used for large ones. The figure shows the structure of an upper disc spring scale, which uses the most common helical spring. The lower end of the helical spring is attached to the pan support bar of the Roberval mechanism (a link mechanism consisting of a parallelogram ABCD) that supports the pan, and the upper end is attached to the scale frame via a zero-point adjustment screw. The extension of the spring, which is proportional to the weight of the object on the pan, is magnified by a rack lever that is linked to the pan support bar, and this is converted into the movement of a pointer that rotates via a rack and pinion, and the mass of the object is read off on a scale plate calibrated with weights.
