West Saxons

Japanese: ウェスト・サクソン族 - うぇすとさくそんぞく
West Saxons

…the ancient name of the southern part of England. Originally one of the seven Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of the Middle Ages, it ruled over an area roughly covering the present-day counties of Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, Somerset, and Avon. The name comes from the West Saxon tribe. According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the Saxons, who arrived from the continent around 495, founded the kingdom in southern Hampshire in 519. During the first half of the 9th century under King Egbert, it became the center of the seven kingdoms, and during the reign of Alfred the Great (871-899), it prevented the invasion of the Danes and unified England.
