Utsukushigahara

This plateau is located in the Chikuma region, east of Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. It is a wavy plateau with an average altitude of about 2000 meters, surrounded by mountains such as Monomiishiyama, Takeshimine, Ogahana, and Chausuyama, with the highest peak at 2034 meters. It offers a 360-degree view, so much so that it is called the observation deck of Shinshu. Traditionally, this plateau was said to be a lava plateau, but recently it is believed to have been formed by the uplift of volcanic tuff and conglomerate that had accumulated in a depression, and then eroded away. The plateau covers an area of ​​about 5 square kilometers, and is covered with grassland with no trees. This is because it was previously used as a ranch (established in 1899), and was formed artificially. Utsukushigahara is one of the centers of the Yatsugatake Chushin Highlands Quasi-National Park, and is a representative highland tourist destination in Shinshu, attracting approximately one million tourists annually. The plateau is home to Utsukushi Tower, Sanjiro Ranch, and the Utsukushigahara Highlands Art Museum, and offers magnificent views of the Northern Alps, Mt. Fuji, the Yatsugatake Mountains, and the Central Alps. The first distinctive feature of this tourist destination is the wide variety of plants, with a mixture of lowland and subalpine plants, including colonies of white mountain bellflower, Japanese anemone, scabious buttercup, and willow herb, as well as Renge Azalea, Lily of the Valley, and Hemerocallis. There is also a wide variety of butterflies. The second distinctive feature is the excellent views all around, and the poet Ozaki Kihachi wrote, "When I reached the top and suddenly opened my eyes to the view, I thought for a moment that the ceiling of the world had fallen away..." It can be reached by bus from Matsumoto City, Chino City, Komoro City, etc. in about an hour, and there are lodges, hotels, hiking trails, and campsites. The Kirigamine Venus Line opened in 1981.

長野県松本市の東方、筑摩産地(ちくまさんち)にある高原台地。最高峰王ヶ頭(おうがとう)（2034メートル）を中心に、物見石山、武石峰(たけしみね)、王ヶ鼻、茶臼山(ちゃうすやま)などの山々に囲まれた平均高度2000メートル前後の波浪状高原台地で、信州の展望台といわれるほど360度方向の眺望がきく。従来、この高原は溶岩台地といわれたが、最近は、凹地(くぼち)に堆積(たいせき)した火山性の凝灰岩や礫岩(れきがん)が隆起し、その後侵食されてできたものとされている。高原の面積はおよそ5平方キロメートルで、一面の草原をなし樹木はない。これは、従来牧場（1899年開設）に利用していたためで、人工的に形成されたものである。美ヶ原は八ヶ岳(やつがたけ)中信高原国定公園の一つの中心をなし、年間延べ約100万人の観光客が訪れる信州の代表的高原観光地。高原には美しの塔、三城(さんじろ)牧場、美が原高原美術館などがあり、北アルプス連峰をはじめ、富士山、八ヶ岳、中央アルプスなど雄大な眺めを楽しむことができる。この観光地の特色は、第一に植物の種類が多いことで、低山帯と亜高山帯の植物が入り交じり、ハクサンフウロ、ウメバチソウ、マツムシソウ、ヤナギランなどの群落や、レンゲツツジ、スズラン、キスゲなどがある。またチョウの種類も多い。第二は四周の眺望が優れていることで、詩人尾崎喜八(きはち)は、「登りついて不意に開けた眼(め)の前の風景に、しばらくは世界の天井が抜けたかと思う……」と歌っている。松本市、茅野(ちの)市、小諸(こもろ)市などからいずれもバスで1時間内外で到達でき、ロッジやホテル、ハイキングコース、キャンプ場がある。なお1981年（昭和56）霧ヶ峰ビーナスラインが開通した。
