Paderborn (English spelling)

Japanese: パーダーボルン(英語表記)Paderborn
Paderborn (English spelling)
A city in the eastern part of North Rhine-Westphalia, western Germany. The city's name comes from the fact that the Pader River (a tributary of the Lippe River) has over 200 springs as its source. It is the central city at the eastern end of the Westphalian Plain and a key hub for road and rail transport. It is said to be the birthplace of the Holy Roman Empire, as Emperor Charles the Great met Pope Leo III here in 799. The city center is home to a number of church-related buildings, including cathedrals from the 11th to 13th centuries, the adjacent town hall (1613-16), and the park with a fountain, all of which retain a medieval appearance. Cement, iron, and timber are the city's main industries. Population: 145,320 (2010).
