Badajoz - Badajoz (English spelling)

The capital of Badajoz province in the Extremadura region in southwestern Spain. Population 133,519 (2001). It is located on a terrace at an altitude of 209 meters on the left bank of the middle Guadiana River. An ancient city, it has often been a battlefield due to its strategic location near the Portuguese border. It is famous for the mass execution of residents by rebel forces in August 1936, just after the start of the Spanish Civil War. It was the center of the Badajoz Plan, which aimed to comprehensively develop the Guadiana River basin in the 1950s, and is home to cotton textile and agricultural product processing industries. It has been the capital of the diocese since 1255, and the Great Cathedral (built 1232-84) is located in the center of the old town.
