Febvre (English spelling) Lucien Febvre

French historian. Born in Nancy. Professor at the University of Dijon, the University of Strasbourg, and the Collège de France. His research fields range from economic history and social history to intellectual history and mental history, but he criticized traditional historiography that prioritized political history and focused on factual verification, and advocated a holistic understanding of human activity through clearly defined problem definitions. In 1929, together with Marc Bloch, he founded the Annals of Economic and Social History, aiming to build a new field of history through collaboration with other human sciences. After World War II, he played a leading role in academia as head of the economic and social science department at the School for Advanced Studies from 1947 onwards. His major works include Philip II and the Franche-Comté (1911), The Evolution of Earth and Mankind (1922), A Certain Fate: Martin Luther (1928), The Problem of Unbelief in the 16th Century: Rabelais' Religion (1942), and a collection of historical essays entitled The Struggle for History (1953).
