A village in the northern part of Karnataka state in southwest India, formerly known as Vātāpi, flourished as the capital of the early Chalukya dynasty. There are four rock caves on the northern slope of the southern hill, of which Cave 4 at the eastern end is a Jain cave, and the others are Hindu caves. Cave 3, the largest, has an inscription dating to 578, and Cave 1 and 2 are roughly of the same era. The high reliefs of mythological scenes on the walls and the Mithuna figures on the corbels are supple and powerful, and there are excellent reliefs on the ceiling. Fragments of murals depicting court scenes under the eaves of Cave 3 are also valuable. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
