A port city in the Sakhalin region of Russia. It is located on the western coast of the southern part of Sakhalin Island, overlooking the Tatar Strait, about 70 km west-southwest of the regional capital, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. It is a fishing base, with a fishery processing plant, a freezing facility, and a ship repair facility. There are coalfields nearby. The city's name commemorates the Russian Far East explorer GI Nevelskoy. Formerly a Japanese territory, its Japanese name is Honto. Population is about 20,000.
