A village in Shimoina County in southern Nagano Prefecture. Population 2,270 (1995). It is located at the southern end of the Ina Basin, on the eastern bank of the midstream of the Tenryu River, and borders Iida City to the north. Over 80% of the village area is forest and wilderness, and during the Edo period, the village paid tax in the form of cedar timber. Cultivated land and settlements are scattered on the river terraces of the Tenryu River, which flows southward, forming a deep gorge in the west, and along its tributary, the Mango River. Rice cultivation, sericulture, and livestock farming are carried out here, and konjac cultivation is also thriving. In addition to Tenryu River rafting, the village is also home to the Taifu Dam, Minami-miya Gorge, and Mango Valley, and is part of the Tenryu-Okumikawa Quasi-National Park. 長野県南部,下伊那郡の村。人口2270(1995)。伊那盆地南端,天竜川中流東岸に位置し,北は飯田市に接する。村域の80%以上が山林・原野で,江戸時代には年貢として榑木(くれき)を納めた。西部を深い峡谷をつくって南流する天竜川の河岸段丘上や支流の万古(まんご)川沿いに耕地や集落が点在する。米作,養蚕,畜産が行われ,コンニャク栽培も盛ん。天竜川下りが行われるほか,泰阜ダム,南宮峡,万古渓谷があり,天竜奥三河国定公園に属する。
