...After World War II, it was rarely worn by anyone other than the elderly. In England it was called a boater, and in France it was called a canotier, because it was worn by people who rode in boats. The sailor hats and midshipman-style straw hats that appeared for men and women from the end of the 19th century are also varieties of the cancan hat.
