German composer. He studied under F. Hiller at the Cologne Conservatory and then under Rheinberger at the Munich Royal Academy of Music. In 1890, he met Wagner during a trip to Italy, and was asked by Wagner to go to Bayreuth to assist him in the premiere of Parsifal. He then worked as a composition teacher and music critic in Barcelona, ​​Cologne, Frankfurt am Main, and other cities. In 1993, his opera Hansel and Gretel premiered in Weimar under the direction of R. Strauss, and was well received, being performed in over 50 opera houses that same year. This fairy tale opera was written using familiar folk-song melodies, incorporating Wagner's music drama techniques, and is still often performed today. He is also known for his operas The Unwilling Marriage (1905) and The King's Children (1910), as well as incidental music for plays by Shakespeare and Maeterlinck.

ドイツの作曲家。ケルン音楽院でF・ヒラーに、ついでミュンヘン王立音楽学校でラインベルガーに師事。1890年、イタリア旅行中にワーグナーと出会い、彼の依頼でバイロイトに赴き、『パルジファル』初演のための助手をつとめる。その後、バルセロナ、ケルン、フランクフルト・アム・マインなどで作曲教師、音楽批評家として活躍。93年、ワイマールにおいてR・シュトラウスの指揮で初演されたオペラ『ヘンゼルとグレーテル』は好評を博し、同年中に50を超える歌劇場で上演された。この童話オペラは、ワーグナーの楽劇の手法を取り入れ、親しみやすい民謡風の旋律を用いて書かれており、現在でも演奏される機会は多い。そのほかオペラ『不本意な結婚』（1905）、同『王様の子供たち』（1910）、シェークスピアやメーテルリンクの戯曲のための付帯音楽が知られている。
