Ashino

Japanese: 芦野 - あしの
Ashino

A district of Nasu Town, Nasu County, Tochigi Prefecture. Formerly known as Ashino Town. In the Middle Ages, it flourished as a castle town of the Ashino clan, and in the early modern period, as a post station on the Oshu Kaido road. However, it fell into disuse after being cut off from the Tohoku Main Line and National Route 4. National Route 294 runs through it. In front of Onsen Shrine in the northwest of Ashino, there is a "Wandering Willow," famous for the Noh song by Saigyo, "By the roadside, clear water flows through the willow shadows, for a moment, so I stop."
