…A short, sleeveless vest, also called a waistcoat in Japan. Vest is the American name, while in Britain it is called a waistcoat. The origin of the vest dates back to the 16th century, but the modern vest is said to have originated from the woolen postboy waistcoat, worn by British postmen and coachmen to keep warm from the early 19th century.
