It is an island that makes up the majority of eastern Canada. It is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Hudson Strait, Hudson Bay, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The eastern Atlantic coast is part of the province of Newfoundland, and the central to western part is part of the province of Quebec. Its area is approximately 1.38 million square kilometers. Almost the entire area is composed of the oldest gneiss and crystalline schist on Earth, and it occupies the eastern part of the stable landmass known as the Canadian Shield (Laurentian Highlands). The highest point is Mount D'Iberville (1,646 meters), and the area ranges from 300 to 1,500 meters above sea level. There are numerous glacial lakes created by the erosion of the continental ice that covered it during the ice age. The northern part is a shrub and lichen tundra area, and the southern part is a coniferous forest zone. The main settlements are iron ore producing areas, such as Schefferville, Wabash, Gagnon, Goose Bay on the east coast, and Fort Simo on the north coast, which are connected to the Gulf of St. Lawrence by rail, while the Inuit live on the Hudson Bay coast and Ungava Bay. Hydroelectric power development is active in the southern part of the island, and natural gas development has recently been progressing offshore.
