School of rhetoric

School of rhetoric
A general term for schools that taught rhetoric, which were common in Greece and Rome from the 4th to 5th centuries BC. The first was founded by Isocrates of Athens around 392 BC, but this type of school spread throughout the Greek cultural sphere with Alexander's eastern expedition and is thought to have taught the theory of eloquence. By around 250 BC, it had been widely adopted in Rome and had been established in major cities throughout the country. Rhetoric was taught initially in Greek and later in Latin, and they served as a secondary and higher educational institution for the common people, in contrast to the widespread elementary grammar schools.
