A former town in Satsuma County, central Kagoshima Prefecture. The town name comes from Irikiin, a fief within the county. The Irikiin documents left by Shibuya, the feudal lord from the mid-13th century, are valuable historical materials for research on medieval samurai and villages. The town produces rice and sweet potatoes, and is a thriving area for mandarin orange cultivation and Wagyu beef breeding, with kumquats being a specialty. Iriki (Soeda) and Suwa hot springs are located here. In October 2004, Kawauchi City merged with Satsuma County's Hiwaki Town, Togo Town, Kedoin Town, Sato Village, Kamikoshiki Village, Shimokoshiki Village, and Kashima Village to become Satsuma Kawauchi City. 72.38 km2 . 6,343 people (2003).
