A men's hat with a high, cylindrical crown, flat top, and narrow brim that is turned up on both sides. It is black and shiny. It was invented by the Englishman John Hetherington in 1797, and was called silk beaver hat because it was made of beaver, but it gradually changed to silk with a fluffy finish. It became very popular around 1830, and was commonly worn by young people during the 19th century. From the end of the century, it became a formal dress hat and was worn until the first half of the 20th century. It was also sometimes worn in colors other than black as a casual dress. It has also been worn as a formal riding hat by women since the mid-19th century. It is also called a top hat or high hat.
