Iwakura - Iwakura

Japanese:
Iwakura - Iwakura

The name "iwakura" appears in the Kojiki and Nihon shoki (Records of Ancient Matters) and Fudoki (Topographical Records), and was originally a word praising a place where a god resided. Eventually it came to be recognized as referring to a specific rock that was used as a dwelling place for the god during festivals, and the stone itself came to be the subject of worship as a sacred object. Iwakura became clearly defined archaeologically after the Kofun period, with examples including the Okinoshima ruins (Fukuoka Prefecture), the Tenpaku ruins (Shizuoka Prefecture), and the Miwayamanokami ruins (Nara Prefecture) at the foot of Mt. Miwa, where various artifacts used in rituals have been excavated around the megaliths.
