He was not satisfied with Shintoism, which had been the family teaching since his grandfather's generation, and developed his own theory, leading his father to say, "Our family has given birth to a devil." In 1760, he became a professor at the Kyojukan of the domain school. He later became a magistrate of the port, and during the Tenmei domain reforms, he was selected by the domain lord Yamauchi Toyotsugu, and after serving as a magistrate of the county and magistrate of construction, he was appointed to the important position of ometsuke, and carried out reform politics, eventually resigning in 1791.
