Ajari
〘Noun〙 (Transliteration of ācārya. Meaning a teacher who instructs his disciples and serves as an example) Buddhist term. In the Hinayana Vinaya, this includes the categories of monkhood, receiving precepts, teaching, receiving sutras , and relying on, while in Mahayana there are two categories: katsuma (Konma) and teaching. In Esoteric Buddhism there are two categories: gakuho kanjo and denbo kanjo. Azari. ① (a) Refers to a person who is knowledgeable in esoteric Buddhism and has received the denbo kanjo (a ceremony to transmit the secret teachings). A title given by imperial decree to monks who have later received the denbo kanjo. *Sandai Jitsuroku - March, 884, " Visiting two young monks, receiving the Shinsho and receiving the Ajari - level kanjo " (b) A monk who has received imperial orders to pray at seven high mountains, including Mount Hiei, and other places. (ha) A monk of noble stature who was given the title of a single person. Isshin Ajari. ② In the Heian period, a monk who performed the ceremonies held by imperial command together with the lecturers and attendants . By extension, a monk who served as the leader of the ceremonies (= incantations ). ※Daikyo (before the 12th century) vol. 4 "There is no one who can approach an Ajari." ③ A respectful title given to a monk of high virtue who generally teaches students and becomes their teacher. ※Sekkyo-bushi Aigo no Waka (Yamamoto Kyubei version) (1661) vol. 4 "From this time on, the people of Hiezan Saito Kitada were called that no Ajari." [Additional note] Generally, it is considered to be a transliteration of the Sanskrit word Acharya, but some also consider it to be a transliteration of the word form Asha-ri/Asha-ri in the Tocharian language of Central Asia.

〘Noun〙 Buddhist term. ① = ajari (Ajari) ①※Utsubo (around 970-999) Fukiage: "He had deep enlightenment and showed signs . He reported this to the Emperor and was made an Ajari at Shingon-in." ② = ajari (Ajari) ②※Makura (end of the 10th century) 123: "The Ajari for the July ritual is held during the day." ③ = ajari (Ajari) ③※Sagomo Monogatari (around 1069-77?) 1: "His mother went to Uzumasa and returned in the carriage of some Ajari from Ninna-ji ."

〘名〙 (ācārya の音訳。弟子を教授し、その軌範となる師の意) 仏語。小乗の律ではこれに出家、受戒、教授、受経、依止(えじ)などの別を数え、また大乗では羯摩(かつま・こんま)、教授の二つをたてる。また密教では、学法灌頂と伝法灌頂の二つをたてる。あざり。①(イ) 密教で秘法に通じ、伝法灌頂(でんぼうかんじょう)(=秘法を伝授する儀式)を受けた者をいう。後に伝法灌頂を受けた僧に宣旨によって与えられる称号。※三代実録‐元慶八年(884)三月「詣少僧都真紹阿闍梨位灌頂」(ロ) 比叡山など七高山、およびその他に祈祷の勅命を受けた僧。(ハ) 一身を限って補せられた貴種の名徳の僧。一身阿闍梨。② 平安時代、勅旨を奉じて修せられる法会を、已講(いこう)、内供(ないぐ)とともにとり行なう僧。転じて、修法(ずほう)(=加持祈祷)の導師を勤める僧。※大鏡(12C前)四「阿闍梨にまうでくる人も候はぬを」③ 一般に弟子を教え、その師範となる高徳の僧の尊称。※説経節・あいごの若(山本九兵衛板)(1661)四「是よりひゑいざんさいとう北だに、そののあしゃりと申せしは」[補注]一般に梵語アーチャーリャの音写とされるが、中央アジアのトカラ語での語形アーシャリ・アシャリの音写とする見方もある。

〘名〙 仏語。① =あじゃり(阿闍梨)①※宇津保(970‐999頃)吹上下「悟いと深く、験(しるし)あり。院奏せさせ給て、真言院のあざりになされぬ」② =あじゃり(阿闍梨)②※枕(10C終)一二三「七月の修法のあざり、日中の時(じ)などおこなふ」③ =あじゃり(阿闍梨)③※狭衣物語(1069‐77頃か)一「仁和寺の何がしのあざりの車にて、母上の、太秦(うずまさ)に参りて帰らせ給ふなり」
