〘名〙 (ācārya の音訳。弟子を教授し、その軌範となる師の意) 仏語。小乗の律ではこれに出家、受戒、教授、受経、依止(えじ)などの別を数え、また大乗では羯摩(かつま・こんま)、教授の二つをたてる。また密教では、学法灌頂と伝法灌頂の二つをたてる。あざり。①(イ) 密教で秘法に通じ、伝法灌頂(でんぼうかんじょう)(=秘法を伝授する儀式)を受けた者をいう。後に伝法灌頂を受けた僧に宣旨によって与えられる称号。※三代実録‐元慶八年(884)三月「詣二少僧都真紹一受二阿闍梨位灌頂一」(ロ) 比叡山など七高山、およびその他に祈祷の勅命を受けた僧。(ハ) 一身を限って補せられた貴種の名徳の僧。一身阿闍梨。② 平安時代、勅旨を奉じて修せられる法会を、已講(いこう)、内供(ないぐ)とともにとり行なう僧。転じて、修法(ずほう)(=加持祈祷)の導師を勤める僧。※大鏡(12C前)四「阿闍梨にまうでくる人も候はぬを」③ 一般に弟子を教え、その師範となる高徳の僧の尊称。※説経節・あいごの若(山本九兵衛板)(1661)四「是よりひゑいざんさいとう北だに、そののあしゃりと申せしは」[補注]一般に梵語アーチャーリャの音写とされるが、中央アジアのトカラ語での語形アーシャリ・アシャリの音写とする見方もある。
