McLuhan, Marshall

McLuhan, Marshall
Born: July 21, 1911, Edmonton
[Died] December 31, 1980. Toronto Canadian civilization critic. Full name Herbert Marshall McLuhan. Known for his unique media theory. After graduating from the University of Manitoba, he studied English literature at Cambridge University in England. In 1946, he became a professor at the University of Toronto, and in 1951, he published his first media theory, The Mechanical Bride: Folklore of Industrial Man, which developed a unique perspective on the relationship and influence of media on people, and attracted worldwide attention. He viewed communication through media such as television, radio, and printed matter as the transmission of messages to people, or as an extension of the body and senses, and expressed the characteristics of media in a unique style, such as "the medium is the message." In addition, with the advent of electronic media, global communication was established, and he promoted the concept of the "global village," which sees the world as if it were one small "village." This media theory is still valid in the Internet age, but it is not necessarily optimistic. His books include The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making of Typographic Man (1962) and Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man (1964).

The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making of Typographic Man(1962),『メディア論』Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man(1964)。
