Iligan (English spelling)
A city on the eastern shore of Iligan Bay in the northern part of Mindanao, Philippines. Capital of Lanao del Norte Province. Since the early 20th century, the city has developed as a port city with the development of surrounding agricultural industries. In the 1950s, heavy industry was built using electricity from the Maria Cristina Falls power plant on the Agus River to the west. There are modern factories for electric steel, carbide, iron alloys, cement, and flour milling, and an integrated pig steel plant is also planned. A motorway runs inland to Cotabato and Davao via Marawi. Population: 227,000 (1990 estimate).
