Tokuyama

Japanese: 徳山 - とくやま
Tokuyama
Located in the southeastern part of Yamaguchi Prefecture, this is the former city area in the center of Shunan City. It faces Tokuyama Bay. It was incorporated as a city in 1935. In 1955, Mukaido Village was incorporated, and in 1966, Tsuno Town was incorporated. In 2003, it was merged with Shinnanyo City, Kumage Town, and Shikano Town to form Shunan City. Tokuyama, the central city area, prospered as a castle town of the Mori clan. It went into decline for a time after the Meiji Restoration, but regained prosperity after the establishment of a naval coal briquette plant (later a fuel depot) in 1904. It was devastated by World War II, but after the war, an oil refinery was built on the site of the fuel depot, and industries such as soda, cement, and steel were revived. Today, it is the center of the Shunan industrial region, and a petrochemical complex has been established in the area extending to Shinnanyo in the western suburbs. Tokuyama Kudamatsu Port is the largest industrial area in the prefecture, designated as a specific important port in 1965 and as an international hub port in 2011. Housing complexes have been built in the eastern part of the city, and small-scale agriculture and forestry are carried out in the north. The city is home to the Sugano Dam, one of the largest in western Japan, the city zoo, and Yuno Onsen. The Hooded Crane of Yatsushiro and its migratory site are designated as a national special natural monument. The Otama Sugi tree in Susuma is also designated as a national natural monument. Part of the area is part of the Setonaikai National Park. The JR Sanyo Main Line and the Sanyo Shinkansen run through the city, branching off from the Iwateku Line at Kushigahama. The city also has a well-developed road network, including the Sanyo Expressway, National Route 2, Route 188, and Route 315.

Tokuyama

The former name of a village in the upper reaches of the Ibi River in western Gifu Prefecture. Located on the southwestern slope of the Ryohaku Mountains, it produced lumber and wood products. With the construction of the Tokuyama Dam, most of the settlement was submerged, so all the residents left the village and it was incorporated into Fujihashi Village in 1987 and Ibigawa Town in 2005.
