An island located east of Australia, about 800km south of New Caledonia. Australian territory. John Cook arrived there in 1774. From 1788 to 1856 it was a penal colony. With a mild climate and beautiful scenery, tourism is the largest industry. A whaling base was established there in 1956, but has been inactive since 1962. 35km2 . 1,576 people (2006).
