Sea slug (English name: Ozobranchus branchiatus)

Japanese: ウミエラビル（英語表記）Ozobranchus branchiatus

An annelid in the family Polytminae of the class Hirudinidae. It is so named because it has seven pairs of large gills on both sides of its body. It parasitizes the surface of sea turtles that inhabit the Pacific coast of Honshu. It is about 1 cm long and is divided into a long, tubular neck and a wide, flat body. The anterior sucker consists of three rings, with the mouth opening at its anterior edge. The posterior sucker is large, dish-shaped, and faces downward. A row of branched, tufted gills is located on both sides of the 11th to 17th body segments. It has a pair of eyes on the second ring of the head. It is hermaphroditic, with the genital opening opening on the ventral surface at the rear end of the neck, but the male genital opening is located slightly forward of the female genital opening.

ヒル綱ウオビル科の環形動物。胴の両側に7対の大きなえらをもっているのでこの名がある。本州の太平洋岸に分布するウミガメの体表に寄生する。体長約1cmで，細長い筒状の頸部（けいぶ）と幅広い扁平な胴部に分かれる。前吸盤は3体環よりなり，その前縁に口が開く。後吸盤は大きい皿状で下に向いている。第11～17体節の両側には分岐して房状になったえらが並ぶ。頭部第2体環上に1対の眼がある。雌雄同体で，生殖口は頸部の後端腹面に開くが，雄生殖口は雌生殖口よりわずか前方に位置する。
