Ziegler

German chemist. After graduating from the University of Marburg in 1920, he served as a lecturer at the same university, the University of Frankfurt, and the University of Heidelberg, before becoming professor and head of the chemistry department at the University of Halle in 1936. From 1943 to 1969, he served as director of the Coal Research Institute of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society (now the Max Planck Society) in Mülheim. His early research was on the synthesis of trivalent carbon radicals and polycyclic compounds, and in 1929 he began researching organolithium compounds. Later, at the Coal Research Institute, he devoted himself to research on the synthesis and reactions of organoaluminum compounds, making pioneering achievements that underpin today's organometallic chemistry. In 1953, he discovered that high-density polyethylene with little branching could be obtained at room temperature and pressure by high-polymerization of ethene using a mixed catalyst of organoaluminum and titanium compounds. Today, this catalyst system is called the Ziegler catalyst, and it occupies an important position in the industrial synthesis of high-density polyethylene. For this achievement, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1963, along with G. Natta.

ドイツの化学者．1920年マールブルク大学を卒業後，同大学，フランクフルト大学，ハイデルベルク大学の講師を経て，1936年ハレ大学の教授兼化学部長となる．1943～1969年ミュールハイムにあるカイザー・ウィルヘルム協会(現マックス・プランク協会)石炭研究所の所長を務める．初期の研究は，三価炭素ラジカルおよび多員環系化合物の合成に関するもので，1929年に有機リチウム化合物の研究をはじめ，その後石炭研究所では，有機アルミニウム化合物の合成と反応の研究に没頭し，今日の有機金属化学を支える先駆的業績を残した．1953年有機アルミニウムおよびチタン化合物の混合系触媒によるエテンの高重合で，常温・常圧で枝分れの少ない高密度ポリエチレンが得られることを発見した．今日，この触媒系はチーグラー触媒とよばれ，高密度ポリエチレンの工業的合成法に重要な位置を占めている．この功績により，1963年，G. Natta(ナッタ)とともに，ノーベル化学賞を受賞した．
