Year of death: Unknown (Year of death unknown) Year of birth: Tempo 14.9 (1843) A magician of the Meiji period. His real name was Hasai Kumetaro. He started out as a storyteller under the third generation of Hayashiya Shozomon, and was called Hayashiya Shoraku. Later, he became independent as a magician, calling himself Kitensai Shoichi. He said that he went to Paris in the early Meiji period to learn Western magic and returned to Japan in 1874. He started performing at vaudeville halls around 1876, and gained popularity for his Western magic tricks, such as handkerchief burning and Western-style beheading, which were rare at the time. In 1899, he was given the honor of being shown to the Emperor at the Imperial Academy.
