Xie He - Shakaku

Date of birth and death unknown. Painter and art critic of the Northern and Southern Dynasties period in China. Active during the Southern Qi Dynasty (479-502), his birthplace and career are unknown. A master of figure and portrait painting, his realistic depictions are said to have been convincing. Not only was he sensitive to the latest trends, such as women's gorgeous clothing and extravagant makeup, but he is said to have reproduced even the tiniest strands of hair without leaving anything out. He wrote the book of artist reviews, "Koga Hinroku," and made his name immortal with the six laws of painting he outlined in the preface.

生没年不詳。中国、南北朝時代の画家、画論家。南斉(なんせい)（479～502）に活躍したが、出身地や経歴は不明。人物画、肖像画の名手で、写実的描写は迫真のものであったらしい。婦人の華麗な服装や華美な化粧など、流行を敏感にとらえたばかりでなく、細かい毛すじまでも余すことなく再現したといわれる。画家品評の書『古画品録(こがひんろく)』を著し、その序のなかで述べた画の六法によってその名を不朽のものとした。
