Born: February 8, 1795 in Vilwerder, near Hamburg Died: March 25, 1867, Oranienburg. German organic chemist. He received his doctorate from the University of Berlin (1819), and became a lecturer there (22) and a professor at the University of Breslau (23). He is known as the discoverer of paper chromatography. He discovered caffeine and quinine in 1819, and purpurin in 1822. He began working in research at a chemical factory in Oranienburg in 1832, and in 1834 developed a method for producing dyes from coal tar distillates.
