Runge, Friedlieb Ferdinand
Born: February 8, 1795 in Vilwerder, near Hamburg
Died: March 25, 1867, Oranienburg. German organic chemist. He received his doctorate from the University of Berlin (1819), and became a lecturer there (22) and a professor at the University of Breslau (23). He is known as the discoverer of paper chromatography. He discovered caffeine and quinine in 1819, and purpurin in 1822. He began working in research at a chemical factory in Oranienburg in 1832, and in 1834 developed a method for producing dyes from coal tar distillates. He also discovered that belladonna causes pupil dilation. His works include Farbenchemie (Pigment Chemistry).

Died December 2, 1810. Hamburg. German painter. Studied at art schools in Copenhagen and Dresden, where he met landscape painter C. Friedrich, philosophers Schlegel and Goethe. He created works in Hamburg from 1804 onwards. He was interested in German history, fairy tales and folklore, and painted allegorical and symbolic landscapes and portraits against a background of pantheistic thought, becoming a representative figure of German Romanticism. His representative work is "Morning" (1808, Hamburg Art Museum).

ドイツの画家。コペンハーゲン,ドレスデンの美術学校に学び,風景画家の C.フリードリヒ,哲学者シュレーゲル,ゲーテたちと出会う。 1804年以来ハンブルクで制作。ドイツの歴史,童話,民話に興味をもち,汎神論的な思想を背景に寓意的で象徴的な風景画,人物画を描き,ドイツ・ロマン派の代表的存在となる。代表作『朝』 (1808,ハンブルク美術館) 。
