An atoll belonging to the Phoenix Islands of the Republic of Kiribati in the central Pacific Ocean. It is diamond-shaped with a wide lagoon inside. It produces guano. It occupies an important position as an air base between Honolulu and New Caledonia. From 1939 until Kiribati's independence in 1979, it was under joint administration of the United States and the United Kingdom, and U.S. spacecraft and ballistic missile tracking stations were located there, but they have now all been decommissioned.
