Originally the journal of the Union of Soviet Writers, it became an independent magazine of the Izvestia Publishing House after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The name means "New World." It was first published in January 1925, and its first editor was AV Lunacharsky. It has published many representative works of modern Soviet literature. Gorky's The Life of Klim Samgin, Sholokhov's The Virgin Land Opened, and Solzhenitsyn's One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich were all published in this magazine. In addition to original works, it also contained columns for social commentary, literary criticism, and writers' recollections and news, making it an indispensable source of information for understanding the intellectual trends of each era in the Soviet Union.
