An insect of the Lepidoptera, Tortricidae family (illustration). Its larvae are known as pests that parasitize broadleaf trees such as apple, pear, oak, and white birch. They feed by rolling the leaves of the host tree into a tube shape from the tip. The adult moth spreads about 2 cm. It appears once a year in early summer and lays eggs, which overwinter and hatch the following spring. It is a moth that lives in cold regions and is distributed from Hokkaido and Honshu to Europe. There are several species in the same genus, including the apple tortrix A. breviplicanus (parasitizing apple, pear, mulberry, soybean, etc.), the green tortrix A. fuscocupreanus (parasitizing apple, pear, cherry, etc.), and the black tortrix A. nigricaudanus (parasitizing apple, pear, persimmon, etc.), some of which are important pests in orchards.
