…He obtained his medical degree in 1874 and worked at the Charity Hospital in Berlin, but in 1876 he was appointed medical officer and became a military surgeon. In 1879 he joined the Imperial Ministry of Health and worked on bacteriological research under the direction of R. Koch. There he achieved many accomplishments, including the discovery of the causative agent of glanders (1883) and the pure culture of the diphtheria bacillus (1884). In 1889, together with Paul Frosch (1860-1928), he isolated the causative virus from bovine foot-and-mouth disease. In 1888 he became professor of hygiene at the University of Kreiswald, and in 1913 he became director of the Koch Institute for Infectious Diseases. …

…1874年に医学の学位を取り，ベルリンのシャリティ病院に勤務したが，76年，衛生士官に任ぜられ，軍医となり，79年には帝国保健省に入り，R.コッホの指導のもとに細菌学の研究に従事した。ここで鼻疽の病原菌の発見(1883)，ジフテリア菌の純粋培養(1884)などの業績をあげ，さらに89年にはフロッシュPaul Frosch(1860‐1928)とともにウシの口蹄疫から病原ウイルスを分離した。88年にクライスバルト大学衛生学教授となり，1913年にはコッホ伝染病研究所所長に迎えられた。…
