In 1879 he joined the Imperial Ministry of Health and worked on bacteriological research under the direction of R. Koch. There he achieved many accomplishments, including the discovery of the causative agent of glanders (1883) and the pure culture of the diphtheria bacillus (1884). In 1889, together with Paul Frosch (1860-1928), he isolated the causative virus from bovine foot-and-mouth disease.
