When an imperial princess or queen becomes a Saio, she undergoes purification at the Hatsu Saiin within the palace, and then stays outside the palace for another year before moving to the Saigū at Ise. It is a simple structure with a black-wood torii gate and a brushwood fence. When a traveling monk visits Nonomiya in Sagano, a village woman appears and says that a long time ago, Hikaru Genji visited Nonomiya for Lady Rokujo on September 7, so a religious ceremony is held on this day every year. She reveals that she is the Lady and disappears. That night, during the monk's memorial service, Lady Rokujo appears on a wicker carriage and asks him to clear her delusion of having had a carriage fight with Lady Aoi at the Kamo Festival, and dances in memory of the past.
