A work by French anthropologist Lévi-Strauss. When it was published in 1962, it immediately sparked much discussion, heralding the dawn of the era of structuralism, a turning point in the history of modern Western thought. In this book, he criticizes the old prejudice that sees the mentality and thinking of primitive peoples, such as totemism, as irrational and different from modern scientific thinking, and, using abundant ethnographic material and clear structuralist methods, clarifies that it is not "barbarian thinking," but "wild thinking" as opposed to "cultivated thinking" (civilized thinking), and that it is itself a way of systematically understanding nature through sophisticated sensory expression, a "science of the concrete."

フランスの人類学者レビ･ストロースの著作。1962年に公刊されると，たちまち多くの論議を呼び，現代西欧思想史の画期となった〈構造主義〉の時代の幕明けとなった。本書で彼は，トーテミズムなどにみられる未開人の心性と思考を，近代科学的思考と異なる非合理的なものとみる旧来の偏見を批判し，豊富な民族誌的資料と明晰な構造論的方法によって，それが〈野蛮人の思考〉ではなく，〈栽培思考〉(文明化した思考)に対する〈野生の思考〉であって，それ自体精緻な感性的表現による自然の体系的理解の仕方であり，〈具体の科学〉であることを明らかにした。
