Gyeongju
An ancient city in the southeastern part of North Gyeongsang Province, Korea. It is located in a strip of plain that spans the Hyeongsan River and its tributary, the Namcheon River. It flourished as the capital of Silla from the 4th to 10th centuries, and there are many ruins of the city. The Goryeo Dynasty's King Taejo Wang Geon renamed it Gyeongju, and during the Joseon Dynasty it was called Gyeongju-bu. Wolseong is considered to be the remains of the Silla royal castle, and Cheomseongdae in the northwest is the site of an astronomical observation site. Famous Silla-era burial mounds include Geumgwanchong and Geumreingchong. Bulguksa Temple at the southern foot of Mt. Tohamsan and Gyeongju Seokguram Grotto are collections of the finest Silla art, and both were registered as World Heritage Sites in 1995, and the Gyeongju Historic Area was registered in 2000. The stone pagoda of Bunhwangsa Temple in the city is also the remains of the oldest temple in Silla. It is designated as Gyeongju National Park. Population 268,000 (2005).

韓国,慶尚北道南東部の古都。兄山江とその支流南川にまたがる帯状平野の中にある。新羅(しらぎ)の首都金城として4―10世紀に栄え,その遺跡が多い。高麗の太祖王健が慶州と改称し,朝鮮王朝時代は慶州府と呼ばれた。月城は新羅の王城跡とされ,北西の瞻星台(せんせいだい)は天体観測を行った跡である。新羅時代の古墳としては金冠塚,金鈴塚などが有名。吐含山南麓の仏国寺,慶州石窟庵など新羅芸術の粋を集めており,両者は1995年世界文化遺産に登録,2000年には慶州歴史地域が同様に登録された。市内の芬皇(ふんこう)寺の石塔も新羅最古の寺院跡。慶州国立公園に指定されている。人口26万8000人(2005)。
