A minority group of Latin American Indians living on Tierra del Fuego, at the southern tip of South America. Originally they hunted, and their staple diet was the meat of a camelid called the guanaco. They also ate horses, shellfish, strawberries, and mushrooms. Although the climate was cold, they rarely built houses, and usually slept using animal skins as windbreaks. They made simple tools such as bows and arrows, harpoons, slings, and baskets. They organized into patrilineal bands of 40 to 120 people, each of which occupied a certain area and fought vigorously against invaders. Their religion was based on fear of evil spirits and belief in a single supreme god.
