A sedimentary manganese deposit that occurs in layers and is the main source of manganese. It was formed from the Precambrian to the Quaternary period. The main producing countries and their percentage of the world's total production (1985) are the former Soviet Union (32%), South Africa (17%), Gabon (12%), and Brazil (12%), all of which mine layered manganese deposits. South Africa has the largest reserves, accounting for 53% of the world's. The representative deposit in the Soviet Union is found in Nikopol (now Ukraine) on the Black Sea coast, in shallow marine sediments from the Oligocene era that are mainly composed of sandstone.
