Mexican printmaker. Born in Aguascalientes, a city in the central highlands. As a boy he worked on farms and in pottery factories, but was inspired by circus posters and began to draw pictures, eventually becoming interested in printmaking. From 1887 onwards, under the direction of Mexico City publisher Banegas Arroyo, he illustrated a variety of subjects, including political satire, the progress of the Mexican Revolution, crime, and love, for extra edition newspapers, and was also a kind of illustrated journalist. His prints were often directly engraved with a steel pen on zinc plates rather than woodblock prints, and he is known for his calavera (skeletons) as a subject. His simple, powerful, and often caricatured style had a great influence on the development of Mexican art in the 20th century. He left behind around 15,000 prints and illustrations, and his most famous work is The Skull of Huerta (the President's name) (1913).

メキシコの版画家。中央高原の都市アグアスカリエンテスで生まれた。少年のころ農場や陶器工場で働いたが，サーカスのポスターに触発されて絵を描きはじめ，やがて版画に傾倒していった。1887年以降メキシコ市の版元バネガス・アロヨのもとで，政治風刺やメキシコ革命の経過，犯罪，恋愛などさまざまな題材を号外新聞の挿絵で表現し，一種の挿絵ジャーナリストでもあった。版画は木版画より亜鉛板に鉄筆で直彫りしたものなどが多く，カラベラ（骸骨）を主題にしていることで知られる。素朴で力強い，多分に戯画化された作風は20世紀のメキシコ美術の発展に大きな影響を与えた。約１万5000点の版画，挿絵を残し，代表作に《ウエルタ（大統領の名）のしゃれこうべ》（1913年）がある。
