Japanese: 上[村] - うえ
Upper [village] - Ue
A village in Kuma District, southern Kumamoto Prefecture. Population 5,655 (1995). It borders Miyazaki Prefecture to the south, and the southern part is dominated by mountains such as Shiraga-dake, which is 1,417m above sea level. There is an alluvial fan at the foot of the mountain, and at the northern end is a plateau that is the southern part of the Hitoyoshi Basin, with the Menda River, a tributary of the Kuma River, flowing northwest. Agriculture and forestry are the main industries, and rice, tobacco, and pear cultivation, as well as livestock farming, are thriving. The town produces high-quality cedar and cypress timber, and shiitake mushrooms and wasabi are its specialties. There are Tanimizu Yakushido, the ruins of Kamimura Castle, one of the outer castles of Hitoyoshi Castle, where the Kamimura clan lived until 1557 (Koji 3), and the ruins of the Kamimura Kiln, a multi-chambered climbing kiln.

Kami [Kamimura]

A village in Shimoina County in southern Nagano Prefecture. Population 881 (1995). It is located in the upper reaches of the Toyama River, a tributary of the Tenryu River, on the western slope of the Akaishi Mountains, and borders Shizuoka Prefecture to the east. National Route 152 runs through the west. It was once a remote area known as Toyamago along with Minami Shinano Village, and Kamimachi, in the center of the area, was a post town at the mouth of Ogawaji Pass, known as a difficult spot on the Akihabara Road. Most of the village area is covered by forests and wilderness, and sericulture is centered around the cultivation of tea, shiitake mushrooms, and livestock. It is known as a treasure trove of folk performing arts, and every December the ancient Yutate Kagura Shimotsuki Festival (Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property) is held.
