A village in Kuma District, southern Kumamoto Prefecture. Population 5,655 (1995). It borders Miyazaki Prefecture to the south, and the southern part is dominated by mountains such as Shiraga-dake, which is 1,417m above sea level. There is an alluvial fan at the foot of the mountain, and at the northern end is a plateau that is the southern part of the Hitoyoshi Basin, with the Menda River, a tributary of the Kuma River, flowing northwest. Agriculture and forestry are the main industries, and rice, tobacco, and pear cultivation, as well as livestock farming, are thriving. The town produces high-quality cedar and cypress timber, and shiitake mushrooms and wasabi are its specialties. There are Tanimizu Yakushido, the ruins of Kamimura Castle, one of the outer castles of Hitoyoshi Castle, where the Kamimura clan lived until 1557 (Koji 3), and the ruins of the Kamimura Kiln, a multi-chambered climbing kiln.Kami [Kamimura]Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
熊本県南部,球磨郡の村。人口5655(1995)。南は宮崎県に接し,南部は標高1417mの白髪岳などの山地に占められる。山麓に扇状地があり,北端には人吉盆地南部にあたる台地が開け,球磨川支流の免田川が北西流する。農林業が基幹産業で,米,タバコ,ナシの栽培,畜産などが盛んであり,杉,ヒノキの良材を産し,シイタケ,ワサビを特産物としている。谷水薬師堂や人吉城の外城の一つで上村氏が1557年(弘治3)まで居城とした上村城跡,連房式の登窯の遺構である上村窯跡などがある。
