Fortune lottery (tomi-kuji)

Japanese:
Fortune lottery (tomi-kuji)
A type of gambling in which the organizer sells many lottery tickets, and pays the remainder of the proceeds, minus commission and winnings, to the winner of the lottery. In English, it is called lottery, a collective noun of lot (lottery, luck). Lotteries have been used since ancient times to predict good and bad luck and to predict victory or defeat, and are still used today to select jurors for trials. The Old Testament contains an example of God commanding Moses to distribute land by lot (Numbers, Chapter 26). The ancient Roman emperors Augustus and Nero are said to have held lotteries in which they would throw tickets at the spectators of the arena or participants in harvest festivals, with prizes such as slaves or sandals.
