A village in the southwest of Okinawa Island (main island), Shimajiri District, Okinawa Prefecture. Population 45,253 (1995). The Noha River flows through the gently undulating hills, and National Route 331 passes through the village. Due to the fertile marl soil, the village developed as a purely agricultural village producing sugarcane and vegetables, and in the Taisho era, it was the first place to ship pumpkins and other vegetables from Okinawa to the mainland. Even today, it is one of the prefecture's leading vegetable producing areas. Dairy cow and pig farming is also thriving. It is becoming a commuter town for Naha City to the north, and is one of the most populous villages in the country. There used to be salt fields in Yone on the coast, and salt was produced there before Okinawa was returned to the mainland. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
