A bivalve mollusk of the family Bivalvia that is often found during clam digging (illustration). The shell is 4.5 cm long, 3.8 cm high, and bulges 2.6 cm. It is a rounded triangular shape and bulges. There are many clear fine growth ribs on the surface. The skin is gray-yellow to yellowish brown, with the apex and edges tinged purple. The inside is white, and in the depression below the apex of the shell there is a brown ligament connecting the left and right shells. The flesh is white and soft. It is widely distributed from Honshu to Kyushu, Primorsky Krai, the Korean Peninsula, and the coast of China, and lives in sandy and muddy areas in the intertidal zone of inland bays. 潮干狩りでよくとれるバカガイ科の二枚貝(イラスト)。殻は長さ4.5cm,高さ3.8cm,膨らみ2.6cmに達する。丸みがある三角形状で,膨らんでいる。表面にははっきりした細かい成長肋がたくさんある。皮は灰黄色~黄褐色であるが,殻頂の部分と縁の部分は紫色を帯びる。内面は白色で,殻頂の下のくぼみに左右の殻を結ぶ褐色の靱帯がある。肉は白くて軟らかい。本州~九州,沿海州,朝鮮半島,中国沿岸に広く分布し,内湾の潮間帯の砂泥地にすむ。
