Arao clan

Japanese: 荒尾氏 - あらおうじ

A samurai family whose main territory was Arao-go, Chita County, Owari Province. A local lord descended from the Kamakura Gokenin (vassals of the Kamakura clan). They bore the surnames Takashina, Ariwara, and Taira. Muneaki joined the Rokuhara forces during the Genko Rebellion and had his land confiscated by the Kenmu government. During the founding of the Muromachi government, he played an active role as an emissary of the shogunate in land disputes and other matters. Furthermore, together with his son Yasutaka, he donated over 200 cho of land to Myokyo-ji Temple (Ichinomiya City, Aichi Prefecture), a place of prayer for the shogun, and held the position of land steward in over 10 provincial government tax lands, contracting for over 300 kanmon in tax. In the early 15th century, after the entry of the shugo Shiba clan into the area, the defection of small and medium-sized feudal lords and their subsequent vassals to the shugo continued, but the Arao clan did not have a vassal relationship with the shugo and strengthened their ties with the shogunate.

尾張国知多郡荒尾郷を本領とした武家。鎌倉御家人の系譜をひく国人。高階，在原，平姓を称す。元弘の乱で六波羅の軍勢に加わり，建武政権より所領を没収された宗顕は，室町政権創設期には所領相論などで幕府の使者として活躍。さらに子泰隆とともに将軍祈願所妙興寺(愛知県一宮市)に200町以上の所領を寄進し，国衙正税地10余ヵ所に地頭職をもち，300貫文余の正税を請け負った。15世紀初め，守護斯波氏の入部後，中小領主層の離反と彼らの守護被官化が続く中で，荒尾氏は守護と被官関係をもたず，幕府との関係を強化。
