Annals of the Yi Dynasty

Japanese:
Annals of the Yi Dynasty
A Korean history book. Currently known as the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty. It consists of 1,706 volumes. It chronologically describes the achievements of the successive kings of the Yi Dynasty (Joseon Dynasty) from Taejo to Cheoljong (1392-1863). It was compiled after the deaths of each king, and some of the works have been revised several times. Initially, it was only kept in the Chungju archives, but in 1439, archives were added to Jeonju and Seongju, and four hand-copied copies were made, along with the internal archives of the Chunjukan, and placed separately in each archive. Later, one clean copy and three type-printed copies were made and placed separately in the four archives. In 1592, the three archives were burned during the invasion of Hideyoshi's army (the Imjin War). After the war ended, four copies were restored in type based on the Jeonju archives that had survived the fire, and placed in the Nae-shi-ko and four outer archives (Manisan, later Jeongjoksan, Myohyangsan, later Seoksangsan, Taebaeksan, and Odaesan) newly built in strategic locations. After the reign of Hyojong, all five copies were printed in type. During the Japanese colonial period, all were collected in the center by order of the Government-General of Korea, and the Odaesan archives were kept at the Imperial University of Tokyo, but most of them were burned in the Great Kanto Earthquake. However, a copy was made in 1922 and sent by the Government-General of Korea to the Imperial Household (now the Imperial Household Agency), and is kept there, and Korea is demanding that it be returned. The remaining copies of the Odaesan archives at the University of Tokyo were recorded on microfilm in 2006, and the originals were donated to the Kyujanggak Museum of Seoul National University. The Jeongjoksan and Taebaeksan versions are in the possession of the Kyujanggak Library of Seoul National University, while the Seoksangsan History Library is in the possession of the Academician's Library of Korean Studies. A reduced-scale photographic reproduction was published by Keijo Imperial University. After World War II, other versions were published by the Committee on Korean History and Gakushuin University (1953-1968, 56 volumes). Not only are they fundamental sources on the politics, economy, society, and culture of the Joseon Dynasty, they are also valuable sources on the history of international relations and exchange in East Asia.
